Free Derek Webb

Some of you may have heard of Derek Webb, a former singer with Caedmon’s Call. Anyways, I’m not a huge fan of a lot of contemporary Christian music but it seems like this guy is up to some interesting things (although he’d probably resist the label). He’s decided to give away his latest album (you can download it here and read about his motivation here) and I think it’s worth a listen. Here’s the lyrics to a particularly good track:
A New Law
Don’t teach me about politics and government
Just tell me who to vote for
Don’t teach me about truth and beauty
Just label my music
Don’t teach me how to live like a free man
Just give me a new law
I don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
So just bring it down from the mountain to me
I wanna new law (2x)
Gimme that new law
Don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
I prefer a shot of grape juice
Don’t teach me about loving my enemies
Don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
Just give me a new law
What’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
For one you can that cannot get you anything
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Wow talk about impeccably ironic timing!
cool thanks Gil. Actually something that’s always conflicted me with selling art… I just can’t make someone pay for something that was a gift to me in the first place (to create)…I read a horrifying instance about that kitch painter Thomas Kinkad recently that sent shivers up my spine… I guess it’s similar to the christian book store feeling I get. I’ve never been able to really understand why it bothers me so much, I mean people do need to afford the costs of living and making the stuff. I feel that there must be a better way than how it works right now. Anyway I think it’s a cool thing that this guy Derek is doing, I’m glad you posted it. God Bless, hope this year goes well.
