Time for a Hummer

Well this is a relief. Here I had been worried that high gas prices had to do with global supply issues and Middle East security when in fact it has nothing to do with either of those catastrophes. It turns out Exxon’s outgoing CEO simply needs a more comfortable retirement package. I hope $350 million will be enough for Lee Raymond to eke out a living in his golden years.
And for all of you who think that oil companies are shameless profiteers cashing in on unfortunate circumstances in the Middle East I think today’s statistics can put those irrational fears to rest. People throw around numbers in the millions and billions so casually but the fact is Exxon is making a paltry $1318 per second. Seriously, that’s hardly enough to get me to Vancouver and back. Actually, according to the article it’s enough to go back and forth between Los Angeles and New York in a Hummer but who’s keeping track.
Update: Our very own Star Phoenix has an interesting take on the latest increase to 119/L in Saskatoon. Apparently we’re driving as much or more as we ever did so our rage against these prices isn’t making too much of a difference in how much we use. Their probably is some kind of ‘price ceiling’ that will force us to make significant adjustments to our driving habits. At a broad level, it seems that we haven’t hit it yet.
Hey man… don’t give my Exxonian friend any sass. You think that gigantic wattle of a third chin could survive on anything less than $350 million?
Yep; I took the cheap shot based on his looks. Don’t care. Too angry
shoot chris I’m fat - but I’m a youth pastor - there sure as halifax has got to be something other than money propping up that double chin - unless of course it serves as a neatly concealed double-chin-money-pouch….
I worked it out. I make $0.00127/second. Now I’m not complaining I keep my six person hutterite colony fed well. My wife can even afford Cutco knives. Shoot baby…
I remember last year’s leadership week when gas hit that high and we all decided that we would go into saskatoon once a month…then it went down and we went in as regularily as before. I must say of all the things to stress about in this world gas prices are what kill me the most…but hey there’s uncertainty in the Middle East…that’s it uncertainty…when in its history has there not been? see ya in a month gil!
That’s what I like to see Gil, a whole whack of cynicism all wrapped up in some cleverly played sarcasm. How delightful. Makes me so proud that there might even be a slight mistiness gathering in my eyes.
In regards to the post content, I don’t think that we will ever really change our gas guzzling ways. Especially with so many people moving to ‘bedroom communities’ to avoid the climbing costs of being a home owner in a city. And alas, for those of us trapped in wee Hepburn, it is all too easy to justify a trip when we feel our sanity at stake.
Hey just wondering if any of you know that the oil companies don’t actually set the price for a barrel of oil. Its the future’s market that sets the price of oil. Jeffery Sach’s and his gang. This whole controversy is a bit weird because on one hand you got the enviromentalist crowd saying we drive to much. So you think they would be happy that gas prices are going up because that might help to discourage you from driving. On the other hand they don’t want the oil companies to make a profit. That just irks them to no end. Microsoft can make a huge profit and that doesn’t seem to ruffle anyone’s feathers but if goes to oil companies… well then we have problem. I guess the solution is for the government to take over the oil business. Then we can start redistrubiting wealth. Make everyone equally poor. Hmmm Cheeky. Really though what would you have the oil companies do? Not make a profit? Government intervention? What do you want to see happening? I don’t drive much and my vehicles get about 50 mpg or better . So it’s not really hurting me.
